Collection: Cavaquinhos

Cavaco (or cavaquinho) is the rhythmic centerpiece of samba and choro— it plays the central role in accenting the subdivisions and outlining the harmony.  A good cavaquinho should have a sharp, fast and dry sound, and the best instruments are handmade by skilled luthiers.  In this large collection of cavacos, we have succeeded in capturing the diversity of available sounds and styles among vintage and contemporary instruments.

Usually, the cavaco has four strings (tuned DGBD), but occasionally one finds a 5-string model with an extra low string (tuned to G or A) to allow for extended melody playing. We have examples of both for you to choose between!  These cavaquinhos are for sale online here and in person at Choro Camp New England.
