Not to be confused with the familiar "tambourine", the Brazilian tamborim is a high-pitched hand drum with a small radius (and no jingles) that is used to accent syncopated rhythms in samba, choro and other Brazilian music styles. It can be loud and cutting when played with a wooden, metal, or plastic beater— as in parade samba or group pagode—, or can be gentle when played with the fingers— as in a quieter roda de choro.
Tamborins (plural) come in a variety of styles— in the Choro Shop and at Choro Camp, we have available two versions of the brighter-and-tighter sounding variant made with aluminum body and plastic head. Instruments by these two brands: “O Profissional” and “Samba Music” function and sound similarly, so you can take your pick.
